Bhubaneswar, Oct 28 (Odisha.in) The controversial "Year Back "system has been abolished and in it's place, state government Saturday has decided to introduce "Cumulative Grade Point Average " system as part of the reformation in the examination process in the Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT).
The state government's decision came in the wake of continued agitation by the students of BPUT , who had resorted to street violence in support of their main demand, abolition of year Back system.
Disclosing this to the media persons in the evening, Ashok Dalwai, Commissioner-Cum-Secretary, Industries Department , said," after careful study of the Shastri Committee recommendation , it has been decided unanimously to abolish the existing Year Back System".
Stating that the Year Back system was "affecting the students psychologically" and was a deterrent to avail study loan in case of the "detained" students, Dalwai said," the new Cummulative Grade Point Average system in place is being introduced".
"The new system would be formally effective during the 2008-09 financial year with the formation of new rules by the BPUT, Dalwai said clarifying that there would be no detention of students in the technical colleges in the annual semester examination during the current year.
Making it clear that Semester system is there to stay, Dalwai said that with the new dispensation, no students would be declared failed or detained in their classes.
They would be simply promoted to their next class irrespective of the grade points/marks secured in the annual semester examination in each subjecets , but each student should score the bench-mark average cumulative six out of ten grade point in the completion of four year course .
Besides, the students with below grade will be given the chance to clear the four years course within seven years by scoring the fixed cumulative average grade points to enable to get the certificate. Fai;ling which they would have to take fresh admission as per rule, the new system envisages .
To defuse the BPUT students agitation and to bring in students friendly reform in the curriculum of study and examination system, the state government had set up a Committee under the chairmanship of Prof.B.C.Shastri, of IIT Kharagpur . The Committee after through study of the examination systems of various universities
Dealing with technical education particularly the Universities of South Indian states, had submitted its recommendation to Government of Orissa.
"The objective of adoption of the new system will not compromise the standards of the students nor will lower the image of the BPUT, but would facilitate the students to score the bench-mark grade for their success", Dalwai said.
He said to ensure the objective of the new reform, pre-requisite course system would be in force for each subjects, change of question pattern with focus on more objective type and the teachers would be provided training in the National Faculty Training Institute to cope the new system of learning.
